From today until 22 January 2022, the e-questionnaire for the Population and Housing Census is open. Everyone living in Estonia is welcome to respond to the e-census. Only people who are included in the survey sample may expect a phone call or visit from a census taker if they have not filled in the e-questionnaire.

The next population and housing census in Estonia will, for the first time in Estonian history, take place on the basis of registers, i.e. no information is asked from people directly, the results are put together based on the data stored in state databases. This is what gave the census the name Register-Based Population and Housing Census (with the abbreviation REGREL in Estonian).

Latvia conducted a census based entirely on register data on the first day of this year, and it can be considered as a complete success. In addition to various databases, a large amount of information from private companies was used to specify and compare information, for example, on housing. The first most important result of the census: last year, Latvia had the lowest population growth in a hundred years.

According to Statistics Estonia, the Dwelling Price Index increased by 5.9% in 2018 compared to the average of 2017. Year-on-year, the prices of apartments increased by 6.4% and the prices of houses by 4.7%.

Which skills should be acquired to remain competitive on the labour market and to prepare for the future? These questions are answered by the Continuing Vocational Training Survey conducted by Statistics Estonia.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that retail trade volume, which had grown by 7% in March year on year, did not grow as fast in April. “In April, the increase in the volume of retail trade turnover was influenced by enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel and by stores selling manufactured goods,” added Pihlak. Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 110,000 foreign and 120,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in February 2025. “The number of foreign tourists increased by 3% year on year and reached the level of February 2019. However, in February 2020, just before the crisis, 10,000 more foreign tourists (8%) stayed in accommodation establishments than in February this year,” Laurmaa added. According to Statistics Estonia, the pilot Census of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011) will take place in nine local governments of Estonia starting from today midnight to the end of March.

Eveli Šokman, team lead of producer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with December 2023, the producer price index was most affected by price increases in the manufacture of wood and wood products, repair of machinery and equipment, and manufacture of food products. “Falling prices in electricity and heat energy production and in the manufacture of fabricated metal products and electrical equipment had the opposite effect on the index. Census results show that 243 different mother tongues are spoken in Estonia. Estonian is spoken as a mother tongue by 67% and as a foreign language by 17% of the population. Therefore, a total of 84% of the population speaks Estonian.
