Census data show that an estimated 76% of Estonia’s population speak a foreign language. While 10 years ago the most widely spoken foreign language in Estonia was Russian, today it is English. Estonian is spoken by 84% of the population: 67% speak it as a mother tongue and 17% as a foreign language.

Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with the previous quarter, the economy was stable. “Compared with the second quarter of 2024, the seasonally and working-day adjusted GDP was up by 0.1%,” noted Müürsepp. According to Eurostat , the EU economy showed slightly faster growth in the third quarter, as the increase in GDP was 0.9% year on year. According to Statistics Estonia, in the second quarter of 2020, the Dwelling Price Index decreased by 5.8% compared to the first quarter, but increased by 4% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

According to Statistics Estonia, in November, the consumer price index remained at the same level as in October 2023 and increased by 4.0% compared with November 2022. Goods were 2.6% and services 6.5% more expensive than in November last year.

Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in November, the volume of industrial production increased in more than half of the manufacturing activities. “Looking at the larger industries, output increased in the manufacture of food products (7.8%), fabricated metal products (5.8%) and electrical equipment (20%) and, to a smaller degree, also in the manufacture of computers and electronic products (0.9%),” noted Bunder. Tea Vassiljeva, analyst at Statistics Estonia, explained that the unemployment rate, i.e. the share of the unemployed in the labour force, was 7.5% last year, which is just 0.1 percentage points lower than in 2024. According to Statistics Estonia, in September 2021, the consumer price index changed by 1.2% compared to August 2021 and by 6.6% compared to September 2020. Goods were 4.6% and services 10.4% more expensive than in September last year.
