Today, Statistics Estonia presented at a press conference a comparative survey of household and place of residence data. The survey, taking place from May until October, is conducted to test the quality of the methodology of the register-based population and housing census. 30,000 persons will be surveyed.

Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with the previous quarter, the economy was stable. “Compared with the second quarter of 2024, the seasonally and working-day adjusted GDP was up by 0.1%,” noted Müürsepp. According to Eurostat , the EU economy showed slightly faster growth in the third quarter, as the increase in GDP was 0.9% year on year. The Population and Housing Census continues in February but on a smaller scale and mainly as phone interviews. Home visits, which were used during the previous census, will be kept to a minimum by Statistics Estonia, to prevent the spread of any viruses.

Eveli Šokman, team lead of producer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that producer prices in manufacturing as a whole increased for the second month in a row – by 0.7% in October and by 0.8% in September. “Compared with October 2023, the producer price index was most affected by higher prices in the manufacture of wood and wood products, in the repair of machinery and equipment, and in the manufacture of electronic equipment. According to Statistics Estonia, in October, the consumer price index fell by 0.4% compared with September and rose by 4.9% compared with October 2022. Goods were 3.7% and services 7.0% more expensive than in October last year.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2022, the consumer price index increased by 19.4% compared with the average of 2021. Housing-related price changes had the biggest impact on the consumer price index in 2022.

Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the increased output of manufacturing resulted primarily from the higher volume of production in the manufacture of wood. “In January, the output of the wood industry was up by 8.3% year on year. This was the first time since May 2022 that the output of this industry increased,” explained Bunder. In January, the volume of industrial production increased in more than half of manufacturing activities. Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that the biggest decline at 4% was registered in the turnover volume of stores selling manufactured goods. In grocery stores, the volume of turnover was down by 3%. “However, the turnover volume of enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel increased by 2% last year,” added Pihlak.
