GDP flash estimate: economy contracted by 2.1% in Q1

According to Statistics Estonia’s preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the first quarter of 2024. The GDP fell by about 2.1% compared with the first quarter of 2023.

In 2023, Estonia’s exports of goods amounted to €18.2 billion and imports to €21.2 billion at current prices. Exports decreased by 16% and imports by 17% compared with 2022. The trade deficit reached €3 billion. Jane Leppmets, an analyst at Statistics Estonia, writes on 2023 trends in foreign trade of goods.

New self-service environment

eSTAT is replaced by a new self-service environment Starting from 12 June, data can be submitted to Statistics Estonia in the new self-service environment at uuringud.stat.ee . To make data submission as easy and convenient as possible, all questionnaires will be updated in the new environment. Currently, only some of the questionnaires have been updated, however, the goal is to update all enterprise questionnaires by the end of 2026. Secure data interoperability between sectors

The aim of the innovation fund project is to create a framework for data interoperability between the private and public sectors. During the project, Statistics Estonia will analyse how to implement privacy enhancing technologies that would allow secure and much wider re-use of data between the private and public sectors.

Foreign tourists have found their way back to Estonia

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2023, Estonian accommodation establishments served over 3.43 million tourists, which is 5% more than in 2022. The number of foreign tourists increased last year, while the number of domestic tourists decreased.

Crop farming survey

What kind of survey is it? The crop farming survey provides data about areas under cultivation and harvested areas of agricultural crops, production and yield, fertilisers, organic farming, liming, seed use, and autumn sowings of winter crops. A large part of the data are obtained from registers (for example, data on areas under cultivation are received from the Agricultural Registers and Information Board, and data on harvested areas and production are obtained from the electronic field book in e-ARIB), and the rest are collected from respondents with the survey.
