According to Statistics Estonia, the change of the consumer price index in September 2020 was -0.3% compared to August 2020 and -1.1% compared to September 2019. Year on year, goods were 0.7% and services 1.7% cheaper.

The Statistical Council, formed by the order of the Government of the Republic, convened on 26 November. Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the turnover volume of enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel grew by 15% year on year, despite the sharp increase in fuel prices. “One of the reasons was the uncertainty felt by consumers – fearing future price hikes, people started to stock up on fuel,” noted Pihlak. According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, 1,315,944 persons lived in Estonia on 1 January 2016 – 2,673 persons more than at the same time a year earlier. The population figure decreased by 1,336 persons due to negative natural increase, but increased by 2,410 as a result of positive net migration. The increase in the population figure was also influenced by changes in the calculation methodology, resulting in 1,599 persons being added to the population.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that the biggest decline at 4% was registered in the turnover volume of stores selling manufactured goods. In grocery stores, the volume of turnover was down by 3%. “However, the turnover volume of enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel increased by 2% last year,” added Pihlak. Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the increased output of manufacturing resulted primarily from the higher volume of production in the manufacture of wood. “In January, the output of the wood industry was up by 8.3% year on year. This was the first time since May 2022 that the output of this industry increased,” explained Bunder.
