The Statistical Council, formed by the order of the Government of the Republic, convened on 26 November. At the meeting, the results of the second trial census of the population and housing census were presented. The Statistical Council supports the decision of Statistics Estonia to combine the register-based census with sample surveys.

According to Statistics Estonia, in October, the consumer price index fell by 1.1% compared with September and rose by 22.5% compared with October 2021. Goods were 20.5% and services 26.4% more expensive than in October last year.

The next population and housing census in Estonia will, for the first time in Estonian history, take place on the basis of registers, i.e. no information is asked from people directly, the results are put together based on the data stored in state databases. This is what gave the census the name Register-Based Population and Housing Census (with the abbreviation REGREL in Estonian).

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the number of accommodated tourists was still 5% lower than in October of 2019, the pre-pandemic record year. Compared with October 2019, there were 30,000 fewer foreign tourists accommodated in Estonia, while the number of domestic tourists was higher by 16,000 in October this year. 143,000 foreign and 132,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in October 2024. “The number of domestic tourists, which in 2024 has been in decline for most months year on year, took an upturn in October,” noted Laurmaa. Census results show that 243 different mother tongues are spoken in Estonia. Estonian is spoken as a mother tongue by 67% and as a foreign language by 17% of the population. Therefore, a total of 84% of the population speaks Estonian.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 119,000 foreign and 128,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in November 2024. The number of domestic tourists, which was in decline for most months in 2024 year on year, took an upturn in October 2024 and continued this trend in November.
