More than 185,100 foreign and 135,100 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in May. Piret Pukk, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the number of nights spent also increased compared with May 2025. “There were about 583,600 overnight stays in accommodation establishments in May – this is 6% more than in May last year,” explained Pukk. Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that the turnover volume of retail trade enterprises, which declined in August , returned to growth in September. “The increase in retail trade volume was mainly driven by enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel and also by stores selling manufactured goods. The turnover volume of grocery stores, however, continued to decline in September, falling by 5% compared with September 2024,” Pihlak explained. According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2022, the total production value of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and abroad decreased by 1% compared with a year earlier.

According to Statistics Estonia, in November, the consumer price index rose by 0.9% compared with October and by 21.3% compared with November 2021. Goods were 20.1% and services 23.5% more expensive than in November last year.

It is estimated that 17% of the native Estonian-speaking population speak a dialect. This is 2 percentage points more than in the previous census. The share of dialect speakers has increased the most in Hiiu and Saare counties, but it has not decreased in any county. 10% of dialect speakers speak more than one dialect.

Ülo Paulus, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2024, the construction price index was primarily influenced by the 2.9% increase in employees’ wages, which accounted for 54% of the index change. “Compared with the fourth quarter of last year, labour force was 0.6% more expensive and the cost of using building machines rose by 0.3%, while the prices of building materials were down by 0.2%,” explained Paulus. Census data show that an estimated 76% of Estonia’s population speak a foreign language. While 10 years ago the most widely spoken foreign language in Estonia was Russian, today it is English. Estonian is spoken by 84% of the population: 67% speak it as a mother tongue and 17% as a foreign language.

The turnover volume of grocery stores continued to decline in July, falling by 5% compared with July 2024,” Pihlak added. Among stores selling manufactured goods, the biggest increase at 28% was registered in the turnover volume of other specialised stores selling predominantly computers

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2021, the consumer price index increased by 4.6% compared to the average of 2020.
