In Estonia, the general government sector comprises three sub-sectors: central government, local governments, and social security funds. The central government sub-sector includes state budget units, foundations, and legal entities governed by public law. The local government sub-sector includes city and rural municipality governments with their subsidiary units, and foundations. Social security funds include the Estonian Health Insurance Fund and the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund. Pauline Kommer, the Government Finance Service Manager at Statistics Estonia, said that all three sub

  3. Industrial production grew by 0.7% in July
In the energy sector, the volume of electricity production (in megawatt-hours) decreased by 19.9% and the production of heat by 7.2% in July. Helle Bunder, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the decline in electricity production in July was due to domestic production being replaced by imports. “Electricity imports increased significantly in July as a result of the restoration of the Estlink 2 connection at the end of June this year,” Bunder pointed out. In July, the volume of industrial production was up in half of the manufacturing activities. Growth was driven by the metal and

Karina Valma, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that collecting data with the Health Interview Survey is necessary so that the state can better support people's health and well-being. “The survey gives us a comprehensive overview of the health status of different population groups. It also allows us to see how health is linked to people's socio-economic status. In addition, the data can be used to estimate how many people need support due to their health conditions,” the analyst pointed out. 3. Retail trade volume up by 8% in January
Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the volume of turnover was unchanged in December year on year but started to increase in January. “The rise in retail trade volume in January was mostly due to enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel, as their turnover volume rose by 4% compared with January 2025. The main reason for this was the fall in motor fuel prices,” explained Pihlak. “The turnover of enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel does not only include the sale of motor fuels but reflects total sales, including income from food

  3. Study: Estonian Adults Among the Best in the World in Skills, Especially in Younger Generations
Minister of Education and Research Kristina Kallas stated that the survey results suggest we are moving in the right direction with our education reforms. “People with lower education levels tend to have weaker skills and lower life satisfaction. Extending compulsory education, as we recently initiated, is clearly the right direction in light of these results. The survey also shows that Russian-speaking residents face challenges in the labor market due to lower skills, often caused by insufficient proficiency in Estonian. Transitioning to Estonian-language education is crucial, and we need to
