According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, the population of Estonia on 1 January 2023 was 1,357,739, an increase by 2% (or 25,943 people) compared with a year earlier. Ene-Margit Tiit, an expert in population statistics, took a closer look at how many ethnic Estonians live here and how many Estonians there are in the world.

According to Statistics Estonia, 30 full-length films were produced in Estonia last year, including 15 documentaries, 13 feature films and two animations. The number of short films (less than 60 minutes in length) produced last year was 132, including 62 documentaries, 44 feature films and 26 animations. Cinema attendance totalled nearly 3.7 million.

Poverty fell among households with three or more children but grew among single parents

According to Statistics Estonia, 2.2% of the population of Estonia lived in absolute poverty and 20.6% lived at risk of poverty in 2020. Compared to 2019, both the share of people who lived at risk of poverty and who lived in absolute poverty fell by 0.1 percentage points.

General government budget is in deficit, debt doubled in a year

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2020, the Estonian general government deficit was 4.8% and the gross debt level was 18% of the gross domestic product. At the end of 2020, the general government consolidated expenditures exceeded the revenues by 1.3 billion euros.

Healthy life years

Healthy life years (also called disability-free life expectancy) shows the average number of years an individual is expected to live free of disability if current patterns of mortality and disability continue to apply. To calculate healthy life years, Statistics Estonia uses the internationally recommended Sullivan method, which is convenient as few data are needed. It requires the mean annual population for five-year periods by sex and age groups, the number of deaths and the share of people with good health in these age groups. Short-term labour market statistics (2024)

From 2025 onwards, Statistics Estonia will no longer update short-term labour market statistics. The publication of short-term labour market statistics was based on a commissioning contract and the contract expired in 2024. Interactive charts give an overview of the labour market in Estonia based on the data of the employment register. They show changes in the number of employment relationships: how many were started, suspended or terminated. There is also a time series of the changes in these indicators. According to Statistics Estonia, in 2021, the gross hourly earnings of female employees were 14.9% smaller than the earnings of male employees. The gender pay gap decreased by 0.7 percentage points year on year.

Briefing session on the updated Intrastat questionnaire

Foreign trade statistics are on the brink of changes. Our goal is to start reducing the administrative burden. In order to do that, we need to first introduce some changes in our existing foreign trade questionnaire INTRASTAT (dispatches and arrivals). These changes will allow the transition to SIMSTAT, i.e. single flow collection, starting from 2025.
