The Population and Housing Census continues in February but on a smaller scale and mainly as phone interviews. Home visits, which were used during the previous census, will be kept to a minimum by Statistics Estonia, to prevent the spread of any viruses.

Population census. 76% of Estonia’s population speak a foreign language

Census data show that an estimated 76% of Estonia’s population speak a foreign language. While 10 years ago the most widely spoken foreign language in Estonia was Russian, today it is English. Estonian is spoken by 84% of the population: 67% speak it as a mother tongue and 17% as a foreign language.

From today until 22 January 2022, the e-questionnaire for the Population and Housing Census is open. Everyone living in Estonia is welcome to respond to the e-census. Only people who are included in the survey sample may expect a phone call or visit from a census taker if they have not filled in the e-questionnaire.

Crop farming survey

Area

What kind of survey is it? The crop farming survey provides data about areas under cultivation and harvested areas of agricultural crops, production and yield, fertilisers, organic farming, liming, seed use, and autumn sowings of winter crops. A large part of the data are obtained from registers (for example, data on areas under cultivation received from the Agricultural Registers and Information Board and data on units that fill in the electronic field book in e-ARIB), and missing data are collected from respondents with the survey. Population census. More people speak dialects than in the previous census

It is estimated that 17% of the native Estonian-speaking population speak a dialect. This is 2 percentage points more than in the previous census. The share of dialect speakers has increased the most in Hiiu and Saare counties, but it has not decreased in any county. 10% of dialect speakers speak more than one dialect.
