The interactive charts provide an overview of the situation of enterprises on the basis of VAT returns. Around a half of deaths in Estonia are caused by diseases of the circulatory system, followed by cancers. The number of deaths caused by cancers gradually increases with age. The causes of death are very different by age. Almost a half of the deaths of children and young people are a result of accidents. Deaths caused by accidents decrease with age. The data on the deaths of Estonian inhabitants help to predict population change and implement measures to prevent early deaths.

General government deficit and debt increased last year

According to the preliminary* data of Statistics Estonia, in 2023, the Estonian general government deficit was 3.4% and the debt level was 19.6% of the gross domestic product (GDP). At the end of last year, the total expenditures of the general government exceeded revenues by 1.3 billion euros.

Statistics Estonia: mobility has decreased during the emergency situation

The preliminary results of the mobility analyses prepared for the crisis commission show that the emergency situation has resulted in decreased mobility of people. For the mobility analysis, Statistics Estonia uses aggregate tables on the movement of mobile phone numbers prepared by Elisa, Tele2 and Telia. Real-time data of the clients of mobile operators were not used. It is not possible to analyse the movement patterns of individuals on the basis of the anonymous data. Statistics Estonia will publish more detailed results on April 8.

Working international students and graduates contributed over 22 million euros in taxes in the previous academic year

Statistics Estonia analysed the economic contribution of working international students and international graduates. The analysis, commissioned by the Education and Youth Board, shows that, in the academic year 2021/22, international degree students contributed 14 million euros and international graduates over 8 million euros in taxes. In recent years, there has been a considerable rise in the number of international graduates who stay to work in Estonia after graduation. The majority of these graduates work in Tallinn.
