In the last 20 years, the share of people walking to work has fallen by nearly half. There is less use of public transport, while commuting by car has risen. Tea Vassiljeva, analyst at Statistics Estonia, looked at the data and examined how the commuting habits of Estonians have changed in recent decades.

According to Statistics Estonia’s Tourism Survey*, Estonian residents made more trips in the first half of 2023 than in the same period of 2022. Finland and Latvia are the most popular destinations, and many trips are also made to Italy and Turkey.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that the turnover volume of retail trade enterprises, which declined in May, started to grow again in June. The increase in turnover volume in June was driven by grocery stores, where turnover volume grew after more than two years of decline. “The turnover volume of grocery stores increased by 1% compared with June last year. The last time the turnover volume of grocery stores grew was in March 2024,” explained Pihlak. According to Statistics Estonia, in the third quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate was 7.3%, the labour force participation rate 74.5%, and the employment rate 69.1%.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2008 there were 73,000 persons in Estonia engaged in different cultural activities. The most popular activity was choir singing.

Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, noted that the economy, which has been falling for ten quarters in a row, is showing signs of improvement, but the biggest changes are still on the negative side. “Among the activities, construction had a strong negative impact on the economy, as did manufacturing. The biggest positive contributor after two years was again information and communication, where value added grew by 7.3%,” Müürsepp stated. According to Statistics Estonia, accommodation establishments served over 384,000 tourists in June 2024, which is 14% more than in June last year. There were more domestic as well as foreign tourists accommodated.
