On 21 December, Liina Osila started as the project manager for the Population and Housing Census at Statistics Estonia. She will be overseeing the organisation of the 2021 census.
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 1st quarter of 2015, 88% of households in Estonia had access to the Internet at home. The share of people using e-commerce has increased.
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2020, there were 175 museums in Estonia with 227 museum sites. The number of museum visits was a little over 1.7 million, which is more than two times lower than in 2019.
According to Statistics Estonia, in April, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 844 million euros. Compared with April 2022, turnover decreased by 11% at constant prices.
According to Statistics Estonia, in June 2021, the total production of industrial enterprises increased by 11% year on year. Production increased in all three main industrial sectors: by 19% in mining, by 14% in energy production and by 10% in manufacturing.
At the end of the year, on 28 December, the Population and Housing Census, conducted every ten years, starts in Estonia. Everyone living in Estonia is invited to complete an online questionnaire for the census by 22 January 2022. In February, census takers will call or visit the people for whom filling in the questionnaire is mandatory.
According to Statistics Estonia, the volume of freight transport through ports fell by 31% in 2023. A total of 23 million tonnes of goods were transported through Estonian ports, 10 million tonnes less than a year earlier. Estonian railways carried a total of 10.1 million tonnes of freight last year, 43% less than in 2022.
According to Statistics Estonia, in June 2021, Estonian accommodation establishments served 216,000 tourists, which is almost a third more than in June last year. There were more domestic tourists and fewer foreign tourists, but the total number of accommodated guests was significantly lower than in 2019 before the coronavirus crisis.
Statistics Estonia has approved the questionnaire for the sample survey of the Population and Housing Census beginning at the end of this year. The final additions were questions about nationality, mother tongue and immigration.
