Researchers and officials have a special interest to find out through the census how many people living in Estonia have two nationalities and speak two mother tongues. Although information on nationality and mother tongue is also available in the population register, it is the first time that it is possible to choose two options in the census questionnaire.

Data collected from registers in the 2021 census reveal that in ten years, Estonia’s population has grown, people live longer, and the number of working-age persons has fallen. Over the last decade, Estonia has seen a rise in the number of ethnic nationalities, countries of citizenship, mother tongues, and countries of birth, as well as an increase in the number of Estonians.

During the population and housing census, information on the highest level of education attained by inhabitants of Estonia was also gathered. Collected data revealed that the educational attainment of the population continues to rise. The level of education of foreigners living in here has also increased significantly. Below we will take a closer look at the educational attainment of the native Estonian- and Russian-speaking population as well as that of other mother tongue speakers and see how it has changed since the previous censuses.

According to Statistics Estonia, in April, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 846 million euros. Compared to April 2021, turnover increased by 12% at constant prices.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that both exports and imports of goods increased in March, as in the first two months of the year. “Exports of goods grew in all commodity sections. The rise in exports was influenced by an even larger increase in re-exports, which rose by 27% year on year. This was mainly due to an increase in the re-exports of transport equipment,” Leppmets noted. According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2022, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 20% and imports by 28% compared with August 2021. Imports from Russia fell by 55% and imports from Belarus by 96% year on year.

According to Statistics Estonia, in April 2023, Estonia’s exports of goods decreased by 4% and imports by 18% at current prices compared with April 2022. Foreign trade was most affected by the reduced trade in mineral fuels and wood and articles of wood.
