GDP flash estimate: the economy grew by 2.1% in Q2

The number of international students decreased last year but their tax contribution increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in the academic year 2024/25, international students studying and working in Estonia contributed 16.6 million euros in taxes. In the same period, international graduates of the academic year 2023/24 contributed 7.5 million euros as labour taxes in Estonia. Throughout the analysed period (2017–2025), international students and graduates have contributed over 317 million euros in taxes in Estonia.

The share of innovative enterprises in Estonia is growing

According to Statistics Estonia, 65% of Estonian enterprises have introduced product or process innovations. The share of innovative enterprises is the highest in financial and insurance activities and in information and communication.

Latest business and consumer survey results published by Statistics Estonia

On 26 May, Statistics Estonia published for the first time the results of the surveys that measure consumers’ and enterprises’ economic confidence. The data are published in the statistical database.

On 4 May, Statistics Estonia begins the economic sentiment surveys that show how secure Estonian residents feel financially and how enterprises see the future of their business activities.

More births and smaller emigration increased the population figure

According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, 1,324,820 persons lived in Estonia on 1 January 2019, which is 5,687 persons more than at the same time a year earlier. In 2018, the population figure decreased by 1,384 persons due to negative natural change, but increased by 7,071 persons as a result of positive net migration.

In April, change in the consumer price index was affected the most by food and transport

According to Statistics Estonia, the change of the consumer price index in April 2019 was 1.3% compared to March 2019 and 3.2% compared to April of the previous year.

In March, the number of tourists in accommodation establishments decreased

According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2019, in total 233,000 domestic and foreign tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which is 3% less than in March 2018. The number of domestic tourists increased and the number of foreign tourists decreased compared to March last year.

In March, the volume of industrial production was greater than a year ago

According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2019, the production of industrial enterprises increased by 2% compared to March 2018. Production increased in manufacturing, but decreased in energy and mining.

In March, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2019, compared to March 2018, the turnover of retail trade enterprises increased 6% at constant prices.

First machine-to-machine submitted data on wages reached Statistics Estonia

As a result of the cooperation between Statistics Estonia, software company Skriining and Ida-Viru central hospital, the first set of wages data that were submitted directly from the enterprise’s IT system arrived at Statistics Estonia this spring.

Producer price index did not change in March

According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2019, the change in the producer price index of industrial output was 0.0% compared to February 2019 and 0.4% compared to March 2018.

Construction price index continued a moderate rise

According to Statistics Estonia, the change of the construction price index in the 1st quarter of 2019 was 0.5% compared to the 4th quarter of 2018, and 2.0% compared to the 1st quarter of 2018.

The first data visualisation hackathon in Estonia will be held in May

Statistic Estonia and Garage48 organise the first data visualisation hackathon in Estonia, to be held on 9–10 May at Palo Alto Club in Tallinn. The winning team will be awarded 3,000 euros and the next two teams 1,000 euros.

Statistics Estonia’s virtual assistant Iti helps both users of statistics and data providers

Iti, a virtual assistant, is serving customers on the website of Statistics Estonia since April. Iti can respond to the most common questions of data providers and users of statistics. If Iti does not know the answer, it directs the question to customer support, based on the content asked.

In February, exports was boosted by the wood sector

According to Statistics Estonia, in February 2019, compared to February 2018, the exports of goods increased by 4% and imports by 5%. Exports increased on account of wood and articles of wood and prefabricated wood buildings.

In February, the number of tourists in accommodation establishments increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in February 2019, domestic and foreign tourists who stayed in accommodation establishments numbered 219,000, which is 4% more than in February 2018. The number of domestic tourists increased and the number of foreign tourists decreased.
