In the Population and Housing Census, which starts at the end of the year, among else, people will be able to give an assessment of their health. Health questions in the same wording were also included in the census ten years ago, which is why the results will provide an overview of Estonian people’s health and how it has changed in a decade.

According to the 2021 census, an estimated one third of the population have a long-term illness or health problem. This is 2 percentage points more than in the previous census in 2011. 28% of the population are limited in their daily activities because of a health problem.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the third quarter of 2022, the labour force participation rate was 73.7%, the employment rate was 69.5%, and the unemployment rate was 5.6%.

Anton Kardakov, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in 2025, the quantity of commercial fish sold by fish farming enterprises increased by 253 tonnes, or 26%, compared with 2024. “The volume of commercial catch declined in the years 2019–2022 but has been rising again in the last three years,” said Kardakov. The increase in volume had an impact on average price. The average price per kilogram of farmed fish was 5.5 euros – down by nearly 30% from 2024. Census data show that 58% of the population was employed at the end of 2021, which is 6 percentage points more than 10 years ago. The increase is mainly due to persons of retirement age, but also slightly to the unemployed and students.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the first quarter of 2023, the unemployment rate was 5.3%, the employment rate was 69.4%, and the labour force participation rate was 73.3%.

Germo Valgenberg, leading analyst in the producer price statistics team at Statistics Estonia, said that, year on year, the producer price index rose for the third month in a row. “The rise in November was slightly bigger than in October and September,” he noted. “Compared with November 2024, the index was most affected by price increases in electricity and heat energy production and in the manufacture of wood and wood products, peat products and crushed stone,” said Valgenberg. Robert Müürsepp, team lead of national accounts at Statistics Estonia, said that although the economy has shown slight growth for two consecutive quarters, the contribution of most sectors has remained insignificant. “Manufacturing was the biggest positive contributor to GDP in the third quarter, with its value added growing by 7.9%. The last time this sector performed so well was in the fourth quarter of 2021.
