The Estonian e-census starts tomorrow, December 28. All Estonian residents can participate in the census. To make sure that answering the census survey is as safe as possible, Liina Osila, project manager of the Population and Housing Census, goes over safety principles and shares useful tips.

At 00:00 on Saturday, 31 December, the eleventh population and housing census will begin in Estonia. In January, residents can participate in the census online, by completing the census questionnaire at www.rel2011.ee.

The e-census part of the Estonian Population and Housing Census ended on Saturday, January 22. According to the preliminary data, 568,891 persons, i.e. 43% of the Estonian population, were enumerated.

During the population and housing census, information on the highest level of education attained by inhabitants of Estonia was also gathered. Collected data revealed that the educational attainment of the population continues to rise. The level of education of foreigners living in here has also increased significantly. Below we will take a closer look at the educational attainment of the native Estonian- and Russian-speaking population as well as that of other mother tongue speakers and see how it has changed since the previous censuses.

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, the population of Estonia on 1 January 2023 was 1,357,739, an increase by 2% (or 25,943 people) compared with a year earlier. Ene-Margit Tiit, an expert in population statistics, took a closer look at how many ethnic Estonians live here and how many Estonians there are in the world.

Johanna Linda Pihlak, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the turnover volume of retail trade enterprises started to decline in May, after a period of growth since the beginning of the year. “This was due to stores selling manufactured goods where the volume of turnover was down by 5% year on year. Piret Pukk, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that about half of the tourists accommodated in Estonia in November 2025 were foreign tourists and the other half were domestic tourists – their numbers were 127,273 and 127,716, respectively. “The number of foreign tourists was still 13% lower than in November 2019 before the pandemic. The number of domestic tourists was 10% higher than in November 2019, which has also been the trend in previous months,” added Pukk. Robert Müürsepp, the National Accounts Service Manager at Statistics Estonia, said that GDP growth was last over 2% in the first quarter of 2022. “GDP increased for the fourth quarter in a row,” he said. “In the case of most economic activities, their contribution to GDP in the first quarter was positive, although mostly modest,” added Müürsepp. He said that, for the third consecutive quarter, manufacturing was the biggest driver of economic growth as its value added was up by 7%. Monday, 28 February, marked the end of the second stage of the Population and Housing Census where data were collected from people living at the addresses included in the mandatory sample. The survey component of the census has ended, but data collection from registers continues until July, to ensure that all residents of Estonia are counted.
