Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

Consumer price index, March 2021

According to Statistics Estonia, in March 2021, the consumer price index fell by 0.2% compared to February and rose by 1.1% compared to March 2020. Goods were 0.5% and services 2% more expensive than in March last year.

General government budget is in deficit, debt doubled in a year

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2020, the Estonian general government deficit was 4.8% and the gross debt level was 18% of the gross domestic product. At the end of 2020, the general government consolidated expenditures exceeded the revenues by 1.3 billion euros.

People’s mobility resembles that of the emergency situation last year

Commissioned by the Government of Estonia, Statistics Estonia, together with Telia, Tele2 and Elisa, are conducting mobility analysis based on anonymous data of the mobile networks. The first results show that the mobility of people has decreased as a result of the stricter restrictions introduced on 11 March and resembles that of the emergency situation period of last year.

Statistics Estonia and mobile network operators restart mobility analysis

Statistics Estonia concluded agreements with Telia, Tele2 and Elisa to restart mobility analysis. The goal of the planned mobility analysis is to help the government evaluate the impact of the adopted COVID-19 countermeasures on the movement of people, assess change in the risk of infection and effectively plan communication in Estonian regions. Mobility will be analysed using the same methodology as in last spring.

The number of job vacancies remains under 9,000

According to Statistics Estonia, in the last quarter of 2020, there were 8,707 job vacancies in the enterprises, institutions and organisations of Estonia. The number decreased by 16% year on year. More than 7,000 persons left their jobs on the employer’s initiative.

The year started with trade growth

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2021, exports of goods increased by 4% and imports by 13% year on year. The biggest driver of trade growth was exports of mineral products.
