HICP flash estimate: prices down by 0.4% in June

In June, the confidence of industrial enterprises declined, while assessments in other sectors and among consumers improved slightly

Today, on 25 June, Statistics Estonia published the June results of the surveys that measure the economic confidence of enterprises and consumers.

The number of international students decreased last year but their tax contribution increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in the academic year 2024/25, international students studying and working in Estonia contributed 16.6 million euros in taxes. In the same period, international graduates of the academic year 2023/24 contributed 7.5 million euros as labour taxes in Estonia. Throughout the analysed period (2017–2025), international students and graduates have contributed over 317 million euros in taxes in Estonia.

The share of innovative enterprises in Estonia is growing

According to Statistics Estonia, 65% of Estonian enterprises have introduced product or process innovations. The share of innovative enterprises is the highest in financial and insurance activities and in information and communication.

Latest business and consumer survey results published by Statistics Estonia

On 26 May, Statistics Estonia published for the first time the results of the surveys that measure consumers’ and enterprises’ economic confidence. The data are published in the statistical database.

Labour market indicators have improved year-on-year

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2018, the labour force participation rate was 71.9%, the employment rate was 68.1% and the unemployment rate was 5.4%. The number of long‑term unemployed was the lowest of the last 20 years.

Last year, trade increased

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2018, the exports of goods increased by 12% and imports by 10% compared to 2017. The exports and imports of mineral products had the greatest impact on trade growth in 2018.

In 2018, the number of tourists in accommodation establishments increased

According to Statistics Estonia, 3.6 million domestic and foreign tourists stayed in the accommodation establishments of Estonia in 2018, i.e. 1% more than in 2017. The number of domestic tourists increased and the number of foreign tourists decreased.

Consumer price index rose in January

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2019 compared to December 2018, the change of the consumer price index was –0.2% and compared to January of the previous year, 2.7%.

In 2018, the volume of industrial production increased

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2018, the production of industrial enterprises increased by 4% compared to the previous year. Production rose in manufacturing and energy, but decreased in mining.

In December, the turnover of retail trade enterprises stayed at previous year’s level

According to Statistics Estonia, in December 2018, compared to December 2017, the turnover of retail trade enterprises remained at the same level at constant prices.

Cereal yield decreased by a third

According to Statistics Estonia, the average yield of cereals was 2,625 kilograms per hectare in 2018. This is a third less than in 2017.

Milk production increased year-on-year

According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, the production of milk amounted to 807,500 tonnes in 2018, which is 2% more than the year before. The number of dairy cows decreased by the end of the year, but the average milk yield per cow increased.

Statistics Estonia to decide the population census method at the end of the year

Statistics Estonia will decide at the end of this year whether the 2021 Population and Housing Census will be register-based. The decision will be made based on the results and quality of the ongoing second trial census.

Construction price index growth accelerated year on year as well as quarter on quarter

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2018, the construction price index increased by 1.7% compared to the average of 2017. In the 4th quarter of 2018, compared to the 3rd quarter, the change of the construction price index was 0.8%, and compared to the 4th quarter of 2017, it was 1.7%.

Industrial producer price index continued to decrease in December

According to Statistics Estonia, in December 2018, the change of the producer price index of industrial output was -0.6% compared to November and 1.6% compared to December 2017.

The population of Estonia increased last year

According to Statistics Estonia, the preliminary estimate of the population of Estonia as at 1 January 2019 was 1,323,820, which is 4,690 persons more than at the same time a year ago.
