According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2022, the Estonian general government deficit was 1% and the debt level was 18% of the gross domestic product (GDP). At the end of last year, the total expenditures of the general government exceeded revenues by 335 million euros.

The balance of foreign trade in services was therefore in surplus by 765 million euros in the fourth quarter, which is 125 million euros less than in the same period a year earlier. In 2022 as a whole, exports of services grew by 31% and imports by 19%.

According to Statistics Estonia, 265,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in May 2023, which is 7% more than in May last year. The number of foreign tourists increased, but there were fewer domestic tourists.

Jane Leppmets, a foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that growth in foreign trade in services was most affected by travel services and other business services. “In the third quarter, exports of services to EU countries increased by 8% and imports from EU countries by 4%. Extra-EU exports of services were also up by 8%, however, extra-EU imports were down by 4%. The latter was mainly affected by a decline in purchases of services from the United States,” Leppmets pointed out. According to Statistics Estonia’s Tourism Survey*, Estonian residents made more trips in the first half of 2023 than in the same period of 2022. Finland and Latvia are the most popular destinations, and many trips are also made to Italy and Turkey.

According to Statistics Estonia, in September 2022, Estonian accommodation establishments served nearly 260,000 tourists, which is 21% more than in September last year. The number of foreign tourists* increased while the number of domestic tourists fell.

According to Statistics Estonia, 22.8% of Estonia’s population lived at risk of poverty and 1.4% in absolute poverty in 2021. Compared with 2020, the share of people living at risk of poverty rose 2.2% and the share of people living in absolute poverty fell 0.8%.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2020, life expectancy at birth for Estonian inhabitants was 78.8 years. Male life expectancy was 74.4 years and female life expectancy was 82.8 years for the second year in a row. Men are expected to live disability-free for 55.5 years and women for 59.5 years.
