Time and what we do with it has a significant impact on our lives. While everybody has 24 hours in a day, the ways in which these are spent differ from person to person. It depends on our personal preferences and responsibilities, also on how free we are to engage in the activities we like. Statistics on time use describe people’s everyday lives and preferences, giving detailed information on what time is spent, and providing a wider perspective on participation in the labour market, consumption behaviour, leisure time and family relationships, as well as changes in household composition

In the first week of December, Statistics Estonia launched the Time Use Survey. The survey takes place every ten years and will end in 2021. Information is collected about how and where people over the age of 10 spend their time and what modes of transport they use.

In order to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Statistics Estonia is suspending interviewers’ home visits related to personal surveys and will collect data by phone or web interviews until the end of April.

Leaving out the population and housing census mandatory for all, personal surveys are mostly voluntary. For social surveys, we collect data from individuals if the data cannot be obtained from databases. People have more leisure time than ten years ago

People sleep on average 14 minutes longer, work 18 minutes less and dedicate 40 minutes more to spending leisure time per day than ten years ago, appeared from the Time Use Survey 2010 of Statistics Estonia. The previous survey was conducted in 2000.

Population census. Young people have more health problems than 10 years ago

According to the 2021 census, an estimated one third of the population have a long-term illness or health problem. This is 2 percentage points more than in the previous census in 2011. 28% of the population are limited in their daily activities because of a health problem.

Actual working hours vary considerably

The average working week of men is three hours longer than that of women. A half of males employed and a third of females employed work overtime. This has been proved in Statistics Estonia’s publication “Time Use of the Population of Estonia” published today.
