Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in July, exports of goods grew primarily due to re-exports, i.e., the re-exports of previously imported goods increased by 26%. “The re-exports of mineral products (incl. natural gas) and transport equipment rose the most,” the analyst added. Exports of goods of Estonian origin fell by 1%. Goods of Estonian origin accounted for 59% of total exports in July, and their share decreased by six percentage points year on year. According to Statistics Estonia, the volume of freight transport through ports fell by 31% in 2023. A total of 23 million tonnes of goods were transported through Estonian ports, 10 million tonnes less than a year earlier. Estonian railways carried a total of 10.1 million tonnes of freight last year, 43% less than in 2022.

Data collected from registers in the 2021 census reveal that in ten years, Estonia’s population has grown, people live longer, and the number of working-age persons has fallen. Over the last decade, Estonia has seen a rise in the number of ethnic nationalities, countries of citizenship, mother tongues, and countries of birth, as well as an increase in the number of Estonians.

According to Statistics Estonia, in January 2024, the total production of industrial enterprises decreased by 8.6% at constant prices compared with January 2023. Among the three main sectors, output fell by 11.9% in manufacturing and remained almost the same in mining, falling by just 0.6%. In energy production, output increased by 15%.

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2021, the biggest increase compared to the previous year occurred in people’s use of the internet for participating in online courses. The popularity of e-commerce also grew, with 62% of the population aged 16–74 having made online purchases. Among enterprises, the use of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management software continues to increase. Enterprises are also trying out AI technologies.
