Jane Leppmets, analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that, compared with 2024, exports of services to European Union countries increased by 4% in the first quarter of this year, while imports from these countries grew by 8%. Today, on 10 January the Government of the Republic approved the list of statistical actions for the years 2013–2017. In 2013, Statistics Estonia will organise over 200 statistical actions.

In 2017, the social protection field was mostly characterised by growth trends: the average old-age pension exceeded 400 euros, labour market measures are being used more and there is a greater variety of them, the expenditure on family allowances increased and new allowances for large families were added. The number of old-age pensioners and subsistence benefit recipients has declined.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that unlike the balance of foreign trade in goods, the balance of foreign trade in services continues to show a surplus, which means that Estonian economic entities export significantly more services than they import. Economic entities include enterprises and non-profit entities, for instance, non-profit associations and state agencies. “In the second quarter, exports of services exceeded imports by €815 million. According to Statistics Estonia, in 2017, the unemployment rate was 5.8%, the employment rate 67.5% and the labour force participation rate 71.6%. In the 2nd quarter, unemployment increased temporarily, primarily due to an increased number of previously inactive persons entering the labour market. Employment and labour force participation remained high throughout 2017, reaching the highest levels in 20 years. In the 4th quarter, the youth (15–24-year-olds) unemployment rate was very low – 6.2%.

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the third quarter of 2023, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 1% and imports by 3% at current prices compared with the same quarter of 2022. Sales of services to non-residents totalled 2.8 billion euros and purchases of services from non-residents amounted to 2.2 billion euros. The balance of foreign trade in services was in surplus by 557 million euros.

According to Statistics Estonia, during the last decade Estonia experienced a fast progress towards economic welfare, but the same cannot be said in regard to social coherence, ecological balance and developments in the cultural space. Nevertheless, both negative and positive trends can be witnessed in all these spheres.

Sales of services to non-residents totalled 3.1 billion euros and purchases of services from non-residents amounted to 2.3 billion euros at current prices. Total exports of services increased by 9% and imports by 8% last year.

According to Statistics Estonia and Eesti Pank, in the fourth quarter of 2022, Estonia’s exports of services grew by 12% and imports by 25% at current prices compared with the fourth quarter in 2021. Services were sold to non-residents for a total of 3 billion and purchased for 2.2 billion euros. The balance of foreign trade in services was therefore in surplus by 765 million euros in the fourth quarter, which is 125 million euros less than in the same period a year earlier. In 2022 as a whole, exports of services grew by 31% and imports by 19%.
