  3. Estonia’s population decreased by 7,041 according to preliminary data
Kadri Rootalu, the service manager of population and education statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the demographic trends of recent years continued in 2025. “Last year, over 6,000 more people died than were born. Emigration remained at the level of 2024, but immigration decreased. Net migration was negative for the first time since 2014. The population of Estonia declined by 7,041 overall,” explained Rootalu. The number of births was under 10,000 for the second time in history 9,092 children were born in 2025, which is 6% less than in 2024. “Compared with 2024, there were 600 fewer

  3. 1,369,995 people: Estonia's population declined
Terje Trasberg, team lead of population and education statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that 18,634 persons immigrated to Estonia and 17,260 persons emigrated in 2024. “Last year, natural increase was negative (–6,066 people), while net migration was positive (+1,374 people). As the negative natural increase deepened compared with previous years, the positive net migration could no longer compensate for it. Therefore, the population fell by almost 5,000 people last year,” she said, adding that the last time Estonia's population declined was in 2016. There were 6,100 fewer births than

  3. Estonia’s environmental protection expenditure rose to €821 million
Environmental protection expenditure accounts reflect the measures and expenditures targeted at the prevention, reduction or elimination of pollution. National expenditure on environmental protection is calculated as a sum of current expenditure and capital expenditure (investments) on environmental protection activities, after deducting transfers from the rest of the world. Grete Luukas, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, stated that nearly half of the environmental protection expenditure in 2023 was made up of expenditures on waste management (€404 million). “ A large contribution to

  3. Pesticide sales were up by 10% last year
Swen Peterson, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that herbicides are still the most sold type of plant protection products. “In 2024, sales of herbicides totalled 597 tonnes, which is over 80 tonnes more than in 2023. Sales of insecticides increased by a fourth, while sales of fungicides decreased by a tenth compared with 2023,” explained Peterson. Herbicides accounted for 76%, fungicides for 13%, growth regulators for 9% and insecticides for 1.6% of the total amount of pesticides sold. In recent years, there has been a rise in the sold quantities of herbicides and insecticides, but

  3. 1,369,285 people: Estonia's population decreased according to preliminary data
Terje Trasberg, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 2024 was similar to 2023. “Last year, almost 6,000 more people died than were born. Immigration exceeded emigration by 550 people. While in the last two years, positive net migration compensated for the exceptionally low number of births, in 2024 the population as a whole also declined by more than 5,000 people,” Trasberg explained. Number of births continues to drop The analyst noted that the decline in births accelerated further in 2024 compared with 2023. “9,646 babies were born in 2024, which is more than 1,000 fewer than the

  3. Average wages and salaries were €2,075 in the third quarter
“In the third quarter of this year, the percentage change in wages and salaries remained at the same level as in the previous quarter. However, in the third quarter of 2024, wage growth was 8.1%, which means that the year-on-year growth in wages and salaries slowed down,” said Sigrid Saagpakk, analyst at Statistics Estonia. She added that, in the second quarter, employees usually receive more bonuses (such as holiday pay), which is why the average wages and salaries in the third quarter are typically lower than in the second quarter. In the third quarter, the average monthly gross wages and

  3. How healthy are the people of Estonia?
Karina Valma, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that collecting data with the Health Interview Survey is necessary so that the state can better support people's health and well-being. “The survey gives us a comprehensive overview of the health status of different population groups. It also allows us to see how health is linked to people's socio-economic status. In addition, the data can be used to estimate how many people need support due to their health conditions,” the analyst pointed out. Opportunity to develop better health services and support healthy ageing The data collected
