According to Statistics Estonia, in 2007 19.5% of the Estonian population lived in relative poverty, a similar amount to the previous year. The difference in income between the poorest and richest fifth of the population was fivefold, leaving Estonia persistently in the top ten of the poorest countries in Europe.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.2%, the employment rate was 68.2% and the labour force participation rate was 72%. The unemployment rate remained low and is similar to that of economic boom years. The employment rate and the labour force participation are even higher than during the boom years. Employment of older persons is at a record high.

How great is inequality in Estonia and how is it divided? As part of the analysis, 11 person profiles were created to depict social gaps and inequality in Estonia. The profiles included a person’s household type, number of children in the household, as well as age, sex, education, ethnic nationality, place of residence, disability and its degree, income, employment, benefits received, distance between place of residence and place of work, health status and satisfaction with life.

The focus of the global goal “No Poverty” is to end poverty by reducing it through strengthening social protection systems and increasing employment and incomes.
