On Wednesday, 5th of August, Walter Radermacher, Director General of Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, will be on a one-day visit to Estonia. He will meet with the Director General of Statistics Estonia, the Estonian Minister of Finance and the Members of the Statistical Council, and will deliver a public lecture.

According to Statistics Estonia, the change of the consumer price index in April 2020 was -0.4% compared to March 2020 and -0.8% compared to April of the previous year.

A total of 737,873 dwellings were counted in the 2021 Population and Housing Census, based on registers. Compared to the 2011 census, 47,793 new dwellings have been built, which is 1000 fewer than in the previous ten years (2001–2011). According to census data, there are now 14% more private houses than 10 years ago and 24% of all dwellings are vacant.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011) 657,791 dwellings were enumerated. Compared to the previous Census, the average area of the dwelling as well as the number of rooms per inhabitant have increased.

As a result of the cooperation between Statistics Estonia, software company Skriining and Ida-Viru central hospital, the first set of wages data that were submitted directly from the enterprise’s IT system arrived at Statistics Estonia this spring.

Jane Leppmets, foreign trade analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that both exports and imports of goods increased in March, as in the first two months of the year. “Exports of goods grew in all commodity sections. The rise in exports was influenced by an even larger increase in re-exports, which rose by 27% year on year. This was mainly due to an increase in the re-exports of transport equipment,” Leppmets noted. According to the results of the register-based population and housing census of 2021, there are 341,995 families in Estonia, of which almost half, or 49%, are two-member families. Compared with the previous census, there are fewer families, but the number of people living in them has risen. 154,625 families (or 45%) are raising minor children and 16% of the population lives alone.

Today, on 6 July a meeting was held between Statistics Estonia and respondents where the main topics were the importance of data collected for producing official statistics, steps taken to reduce the administrative burden of enterprises, and penalty payments.

Jane Leppmets, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that foreign trade in goods grew in each quarter of 2025. “Exports and imports showed the biggest growth in the first quarter, when they were up by 14% and 15%, respectively. The rate of growth was more moderate in the following quarters but still remained at 3% to 8% for exports and at 6% for imports,” she added.
