Population census: the number of dwellings is growing, and more and more people are living in private houses

A total of 737,873 dwellings were counted in the 2021 Population and Housing Census, based on registers. Compared to the 2011 census, 47,793 new dwellings have been built, which is 1000 fewer than in the previous ten years (2001–2011). According to census data, there are now 14% more private houses than 10 years ago and 24% of all dwellings are vacant.

A record quantity of fish roe was sold last year

Last year, the quantity of commercial fish sold by fish farming enterprises increased by 45 tonnes compared with 2023. The quantity of farmed fish was in decline in the years 2019–2022 but has been rising again in the last two years. Anton Kardakov, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the increase in food prices has now reached the fish farming sector. “The average price per kilogram of farmed fish was up by 30% and exceeded 8 euros,” noted Kardakov. HICP flash estimate: prices down by 0.3% in March

Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that preliminary data from the harmonised index of consumer prices indicate that prices have risen across almost all categories of goods and services compared with March 2024. “Clothing and footwear are again the only exception, as their prices were down by 3.6%,” noted Veski. The consumer price index uses weights reflecting the average expenditure structure of Estonian residents, while the harmonised index of consumer prices also takes into account tourists and is comparable to the international HICP.
