Based on the results of the public choice competition, in the younger age group, Estonia will be represented at the European Statistics Competition by team Fresiito from Tallinn Secondary School of Science and team Mamika from Lüganuse School. In the older age group, due to the withdrawal of one of the teams, team Numbritaat from Viljandi Gymnasium and team Merkintä from Narva Pähklimäe Gymnasium moved directly to the European phase of the competition.

Statistics Estonia has announced a competition for engaging 15 district heads of the Census districts for the 2011 Population and Housing Census, which will start at the end of the year. District centres in nine cities all over Estonia will commence work in August; the deadline of applying for the post is 5 June.

Tea Vassiljeva, analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that the unemployment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points compared with the second quarter. “The number of the unemployed was 56,300 in the third quarter, and it has been slowly declining since the beginning of the year, but there were still 1,500 more unemployed persons than in the third quarter of 2023,” she said. Statistics Estonia’s survey on information technology in households shows that inhabitants of Estonia are active users of the internet, but businesses need to protect themselves from security threats.

The Cultural Participation Survey conducted by Statistics Estonia reveals that over half a million people in Estonia went to the cinema at least once last year. Almost the same number of people attended a concert. Overall, 79% of residents aged 15 and over participated in a cultural event in 2023.

As of today, 1 July, a public choice competition is open, determining who will represent Estonia in the younger age group at the European Statistics Competition. The competition was interrupted during the emergency situation but is now continued.

The final scores of the Estonian phase of the European Statistics Competition 2020 were revealed on 10 March. The winning team in the older age group came from Viljandi Gymnasium, in the younger age group from Tartu Veeriku School.

The European Statistics Competition 2020, organised by the European statistical office Eurostat, takes place in 17 countries. Basic school, secondary school and vocational school students are invited to participate. The best teams in Estonia are awarded and will have the opportunity to participate in the international phase of the competition.

The winner in the older age group was team Radiaator, supervised by Kerli Orav-Puurand, from Hugo Treffneri Gümnaasium, and the winner in the younger age group was team Auleobak, supervised by Jelena Ait, from Tallinna Tõnismäe Reaalkool.
