Conference “Small Estonia, big Europe – what do statistics show?” of Statistics Estonia and Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, is taking place today, 24 October. The conference focuses on consumers of statistics.

According to Statistics Estonia's survey on information technology, the use of artificial intelligence-based technologies has risen significantly in 2024 compared with the previous year, and cyber security has become increasingly important. 5% of enterprises used at least one AI technology in 2023, whereas in 2024, this figure has risen to 14%. Of large enterprises, 10% said they had experienced a disclosure of confidential data.

Today, on 27 July, Statistics Estonia presents the publication “Eesti statistika aastaraamat 2016. Statistical Yearbook of Estonia”, which provides a statistical overview of life in Estonia and comparisons with other European Union countries.

According to Statistics Estonia, 34 full-length films were produced in Estonia in 2018, of which 22 were distributed in cinemas in the same year. Cinema attendance set a new record – 3.6 million visits, i.e. 275 visits per 100 inhabitants.

According to Statistics Estonia, in February 2024, exports of goods decreased by 15% and imports by 10% compared with February 2023. Exports of goods amounted to about 1.3 billion and imports to 1.5 billion euros at current prices. The trade deficit was 202 million euros, which is 67 million euros more than in February last year.

Data collected from registers in the 2021 census reveal that in ten years, Estonia’s population has grown, people live longer, and the number of working-age persons has fallen. Over the last decade, Estonia has seen a rise in the number of ethnic nationalities, countries of citizenship, mother tongues, and countries of birth, as well as an increase in the number of Estonians.

Kaia Oras, a leading expert at Statistics Estonia, explained that the growth in demand for environmental goods and services has been due to both increased awareness of environmental problems as well as higher environmental and energy saving requirements, especially in construction. “The rapid growth in energy-efficient new construction and reconstruction of buildings has a huge impact. Together, these generated €1.5 billion in output,” Oras added. According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2022, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 20% and imports by 28% compared with August 2021. Imports from Russia fell by 55% and imports from Belarus by 96% year on year.

Data from the 2021 census show that the share of people with higher education in Estonia is increasing and the share of people with basic education is decreasing. A fifth of the inhabitants in Estonia have a master's degree, and Tartu and Viimsi stand out for their particularly high concentration of highly educated people.

Today, on 3 December, Statistics Estonia presents the publication “Eesti rahvastik. Hinnatud ja loendatud” (“Population of Estonia. Estimated and enumerated”), which summarises the results of the last population census and provides comparisons with other countries of the European Union.
