“In 1994, the life expectancy of Estonian residents was 66.5 years, whereas by 2024 it had increased by 13 years and reached 79.5 years. In both Latvia and Lithuania, life expectancy has increased by about nine years in the same 30-year period. Life expectancy is currently 77.6 years in Lithuania and 75.6 years in Latvia,” explained Eveli Voolens, the social statistics team lead at Statistics Estonia. She added that Latvia has one of the lowest life expectancies in Europe. On the other hand, in Finland, life expectancy was already 76.7 years in 1994 and has now increased by 4.9 years to 81.6

According to Statistics Estonia, in November, the consumer price index rose by 0.1% compared to October. The index fell by 1.1% compared to November 2019, with goods being 1.2% and services 0.9% cheaper.

According to Statistics Estonia’s preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the first quarter of 2024. The GDP fell by about 2.1% compared with the first quarter of 2023.

The online questionnaires of the 2011 Population and Housing Census, which starts on 31 December, can also be completed at public libraries, which have already been supplied with the necessary ID card readers. Residents can participate in the e-census from 31 December until the end of January.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the number of accommodated tourists was still 6% lower than in September 2019. The number of foreign tourists in accommodation establishments was down by 20%, whereas the number of domestic tourists was 19% higher than in September of the record year before the crisis. “153,000 foreign and 125,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in September 2024.
