Which skills should be acquired to remain competitive on the labour market and to prepare for the future? These questions are answered by the Continuing Vocational Training Survey conducted by Statistics Estonia.

Census results show that 243 different mother tongues are spoken in Estonia. Estonian is spoken as a mother tongue by 67% and as a foreign language by 17% of the population. Therefore, a total of 84% of the population speaks Estonian.

According to Statistics Estonia, the change of the consumer price index in June 2020 was 0.9% compared to May 2020 and –1% compared to June of the previous year. Compared to June 2019, goods were 0.8% and services 1.2% cheaper.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that 110,000 foreign and 120,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in February 2025. “The number of foreign tourists increased by 3% year on year and reached the level of February 2019. Johanna Linda Pihlak, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, pointed out that the turnover volume of retail trade enterprises, which declined in May, started to grow again in June. The increase in turnover volume in June was driven by grocery stores, where turnover volume grew after more than two years of decline. “The turnover volume of grocery stores increased by 1% compared with June last year. According to Statistics Estonia, in the first quarter of 2023, the total production value of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and abroad decreased by 11% at constant prices compared with the same period a year earlier.

Eveli Šokman, team lead of producer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with December 2023, the producer price index was most affected by price increases in the manufacture of wood and wood products, repair of machinery and equipment, and manufacture of food products. “Falling prices in electricity and heat energy production and in the manufacture of fabricated metal products and electrical equipment had the opposite effect on the index. According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, 1,315,944 persons lived in Estonia on 1 January 2016 – 2,673 persons more than at the same time a year earlier. The population figure decreased by 1,336 persons due to negative natural increase, but increased by 2,410 as a result of positive net migration. The increase in the population figure was also influenced by changes in the calculation methodology, resulting in 1,599 persons being added to the population.
