Statistics Estonia has awarded the young statistician’s prize named after Albert Pullerits since 2011. According to Statistics Estonia, 2.3% of the population of Estonia lived in absolute poverty and 20.7% lived at risk of poverty in 2019. Compared to 2018, the share of people at risk of poverty fell by one percentage point. The share of people living in absolute poverty rose by 0.1 percentage point.

How great is inequality in Estonia and how is it divided? As part of the analysis, 11 person profiles were created to depict social gaps and inequality in Estonia. The profiles included a person’s household type, number of children in the household, as well as age, sex, education, ethnic nationality, place of residence, disability and its degree, income, employment, benefits received, distance between place of residence and place of work, health status and satisfaction with life.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.2%, the employment rate was 68.2% and the labour force participation rate was 72%. The unemployment rate remained low and is similar to that of economic boom years. The employment rate and the labour force participation are even higher than during the boom years. Employment of older persons is at a record high.

According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, 1,319,133 persons lived in Estonia on 1 January 2018, which is 3,499 persons more than at the same a year earlier. In 2017, the population figure decreased by 1,759 persons due to natural increase, but increased by 5,258 persons as a result of positive net migration.

The focus of the global goal “No Poverty” is to end poverty by reducing it through strengthening social protection systems and increasing employment and incomes. The Population and Housing Census, which started at the end of last year, continues on a smaller scale in February. Throughout the month, enumerators are contacting the people who did not respond to the e-census but live at mandatory sample addresses.
