According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, 1,328,976 persons lived in Estonia on 1 January 2020, which is 4,156 persons more than at the same time a year earlier. In 2019, the population figure decreased by 1,302 persons due to negative natural change, but increased by 5,458 persons as a result of positive net migration.

Estonian people value family. Marriage is traditionally associated with living together and having and raising children. In addition to traditional registered marriages, there are nowadays more and more forms of family, such as cohabitation, single-parent family and blended family. Since 1 January 2024, same-sex couples can also get married in Estonia. According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in 2019, milk production increased by 3% and meat production by 5%, while egg production was smaller than ever. Compared to 2018, the number of dairy cows, sheep and poultry decreased, while the number of pigs increased.
