According to Statistics Estonia, in 2019, the expenditures on research and development (R&D) in Estonia amounted to 453 million euros, which is 24% more than in 2018. The share of R&D expenditures in the gross domestic product was 1.61%, making it the highest share in the last five years.

The aim of experimental statistics is to seek new ways of producing statistics that would allow users quick and convenient access to relevant and necessary information.

To produce experimental statistics we use:

  • data linking and combining;
  • new data sources (e.g. electricity consumption data of Elering, data of mobile network operators);
  • new methods (e.g. web scraping, machine learning);
  • modern visualisation solutions (e.g. R Shiny and Flourish).

The output of experimental statistics may diverge from the traditional requirements of official statistics such as harmonisation, coverage

Supply of enterprises The publication of short-term statistics of enterprises ended in March 2024. . The interactive charts provide an overview of the situation of enterprises on the basis of VAT returns. The statistics cover companies liable to VAT and self-employed persons who have submitted a VAT return. There have been some methodological changes compared to the 2020 version. More than 1,600 people participated in the census rehearsal

At the end of last year and beginning of this year, Statistics Estonia carried out the main rehearsal of the Population and Housing Census. 843 persons living at 422 addresses responded to the test survey online. Interviewers collected responses from 785 persons living at 410 addresses. The test survey response rate was 87.5% and the received feedback was generally positive.

According to the preliminary data of the Agricultural Census conducted by Statistics Estonia, there are 11,400 agricultural holdings in Estonia, which is 3,800 fewer than ten years ago. 84% of the agricultural output is contributed by 1,300 largest producers who use more than two thirds of the utilised agricultural area and account for more than a half of agricultural labour.
