Every sixth person in Estonia lived in relative poverty last year

According to Statistics Estonia, in 2011, 17.5% of the Estonian population lived in relative poverty. The overall percentage of people living in relative poverty stayed on the same level compared to the previous year, but the income of the population increased.

Only Latvians and Lithuanians eat more potatoes than Estonians

According to Statistics Estonia, Estonian resident consumes 188 grams of potatoes a day, Latvian and Lithuanian residents 274 and 234 grams, respectively. The data are based on the European food consumption database DAFNE (Data Food Networking), which since autumn 2010 also contains data on Estonia.

The Agricultural Census survey begins today

According to Statistics Estonia, starting today, 15 September, interviewers from Statistics Estonia will begin visiting households included on the census list for the Agricultural Census. Interviews will take place with households belonging to private persons that did not take part in the 1-10 September e-Census.

The first population and housing census in re-independent Estonia was carried out from 31 March to 9 April in 2000. According to Statistics Estonia, in 2007 19.5% of the Estonian population lived in relative poverty, a similar amount to the previous year. The difference in income between the poorest and richest fifth of the population was fivefold, leaving Estonia persistently in the top ten of the poorest countries in Europe.
