Monday, 28 February, marked the end of the second stage of the Population and Housing Census where data were collected from people living at the addresses included in the mandatory sample. The survey component of the census has ended, but data collection from registers continues until July, to ensure that all residents of Estonia are counted.

According to Statistics Estonia, 1,365,884 people live in Estonia as of 01.01.2023, which is 34,088 persons (2.6%) more than at the same time a year ago. In 2022, there were 11,646 births and 17,315 deaths in Estonia. 49,414 persons immigrated to Estonia and 9,657 persons emigrated from Estonia, therefore, immigration exceeded emigration fivefold.

In the second quarter of 2022, Estonian residents travelled much more than in the second quarter of last year: the number of domestic trips grew by 45% and the number of outbound trips by 319%, that is, over three times.

Last year, the quantity of commercial fish sold by fish farming enterprises increased by 45 tonnes compared with 2023. The quantity of farmed fish was in decline in the years 2019–2022 but has been rising again in the last two years. Anton Kardakov, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the increase in food prices has now reached the fish farming sector. “The average price per kilogram of farmed fish was up by 30% and exceeded 8 euros,” noted Kardakov. According to Statistics Estonia, in May 2021, Estonian accommodation establishments served 90,000 tourists, which is nearly one and a half times more than in May last year. The numbers of foreign and domestic tourists both increased.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that nearly 1.86 million foreign tourists and nearly 1.76 million domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia in 2024. “Compared with 2023, there were 11% more foreign tourists, while the number of domestic tourists remained at the same level. If we compare last year’s figures to 2019, which was the pre-pandemic record year, the number of accommodated domestic tourists has increased by over 200,000 but, at the same time, the number of foreign tourists has decreased by almost 400,000,” noted Laurmaa. According to Statistics Estonia, in the second quarter of 2024, the unemployment rate was 7.6%, the employment rate was 69.7%, and the labour force participation rate was 75.4%.

According to Statistics Estonia, in the first quarter of 2021, the labour force participation rate was 70.7%, the employment rate was 65.7%, and the unemployment rate was 7.1%.

Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the consumer price index in July was up by 0.6% compared with June and by 5.4% year on year. “The last time the year-on-year change in the index was this high was in July 2023, when it stood at 6.4%. Compared with July 2024, the index was affected the most by the 9.1% higher prices of food products. The year-on-year increase in healthcare costs (10.5%) is mainly due to the price lists of healthcare services, which were updated in April,” Veski said, adding that a year-on-year fall was registered in the prices
