According to Statistics Estonia, the unemployment rate was 6.5% and the employment rate was 66.9% in the 2nd quarter of 2015. The number of persons active in the labour market exceeded 700,000 for the first time.
Statistics Estonia revised the population figures for 2000–2013 based on the data of the 2011 census and various registers. According to the revised data, the estimated population number of Estonia as at 1 January 2014 was 1,311,870 by preliminary estimates.
In March 2014, the Member States of the European Union will finalise the 2010/2011 census round of the Population and Housing Census and submit the final report of the census to Eurostat.
According to the final results of the 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011), 1,294,455 permanent residents were enumerated in Estonia. The census results indicate the continued concentration of the population around major cities.
The next population and housing census in Estonia will, for the first time in Estonian history, take place on the basis of registers, i.e. no information is asked from people directly, the results are put together based on the data stored in state databases. This is what gave the census the name Register-Based Population and Housing Census (with the abbreviation REGREL in Estonian).
Statistics Estonia finished the last Pilot Census of the 2011 Population and Housing Census, where during 11 days the conduct of the whole Census was tested. Over 300 employees of Statistics Estonia and volunteers participated in the test.
Statistics Estonia has begun preparations for conducting the register-based Population and Housing Census (REGREL) of 2020. Next year’s Census will be the last where the entire population is interviewed.
According to Statistics Estonia, today, on 23 September at 9.00 a.m. a job competition will be opened for recruiting 90 data processing operators for the 2011 Population and Housing Census.
Starting from today, the persons interested in working for the 2011 Population and Housing Census can register on the website of Statistics Estonia, so that they could be contacted when the job competition has been announced. Large-scale recruitment competitions will be announced in autumn.
