How did the Estonian society respond to the measures implemented during the emergency situation? Did people stay more local? Statistics Estonia, in co-operation with mobile network operators, analysed, based on anonymous mobile phone data, the mobility of people before and during the emergency situation. The project lasted from 20 February to 17 May 2020.

According to Statistics Estonia, population density is the highest in the Lasnamäe district of Tallinn city, specifically in the Linnamäe-Kärberi streets area with 15,800 inhabitants per square kilometre, as shown by the 1 km x 1 km grid map of population density created on the basis of the 2011 Population and Housing Census.

According to Statistics Estonia, the Dwelling Price Index increased by 13.7% in 2014 compared to the average of 2013. In the annual comparison, the prices of apartments increased by 15.5% and the prices of houses by 9.1%.

According to Statistics Estonia, 15,413 persons immigrated to and 13,003 persons emigrated from Estonia in 2015. Net migration was 2,410 and natural increase -1,336, meaning that immigration compensated for the population decrease which occurred due to negative natural increase.

According to the revised data of Statistics Estonia, on 1 January 2021, the population of Estonia was 1,330,068, which is 1,179 persons more than the year before*. Last year, the population figure decreased by 2,602 persons due to negative natural increase but increased by 3,782 persons as a result of positive net migration.
