Industrial output down for the fifth month in a row

Riin Kadarik, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, noted that manufacturing output declined for the fifth month in a row. “The manufacture of wood, the largest manufacturing activity, was down by 2%. In June, there was again a decline in the manufacture of food products, which fell by 3.3%. In food manufacturing, there has been a year-on-year decline in output for six months in a row, but in June compared with May, the decline slowed down,” said Kadarik.

In June, the volume of production increased in one third of manufacturing activities but decreased in two thirds. Among the five major activities, in addition to the manufacture of wood and food products, output also fell in the manufacture of fabricated metal products (by 1.5%) and in the manufacture of computers, electronic and optical products (by 13.2%). “The latter was affected by the decreased production of communication equipment as well as measuring, testing and navigation equipment,” explained the leading analyst. As in May, however, the manufacture of electrical equipment grew by 6.3%.

The fall in the volume of production was also influenced by the repair and installation of machinery and equipment, which was driven by a decline in the repair and maintenance services of civil ships and boats, as well as by a considerable drop in the manufacture of furniture.

In June 2026, 66.8% of the total production of manufacturing was sold to the external market. This share was a little lower in May.

Compared with June 2025, the sales of manufacturing production remained at the same level at current prices according to working-day adjusted data. Domestic sales were down by 4.4%, while export sales grew by 2.6%.

In June compared with May, the seasonally adjusted total industrial production fell by 2.3% and the production of manufacturing by 0.9%.

In the energy sector, output decreased by 12.6% at constant prices in June. Based on the volume of production (in megawatt-hours), electricity production fell by 13.1% and heat production by 7.1% year on year. “The fall in electricity production continued mainly due to increased imports,” noted the leading analyst.

The 26.7% increase in mining was driven, as in May, by the greater extraction of oil shale, peat, and sand and gravel. “Peat production was positively affected by favourable weather conditions,” explained Kadarik.

Volume index of industrial production – an index that expresses the change in the volume of industrial production at constant prices compared with the base period. The producer price index is used for calculating the production values at constant prices.

Value index of industrial sales – an index that expresses the change in the value of sold industrial production at current prices compared with the base period.
