Exports of goods grew up by 3% and imports by 10% in August
According to Statistics Estonia, in August 2026, Estonia’s exports of goods increased by 3% and imports by 10% compared with August last year. Exports of goods amounted to about 1.5 billion and imports to more than 1.8 billion euros at current prices. The trade deficit was 360 million euros.
Jane Leppmets, foreign trade statistics analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that, in August, imports were boosted the most by the increased arrivals of mineral products. “Year on year, imports of mineral products grew by 30% overall, whereas imports of automotive fuel grew by as much as 67%. This was mainly influenced by the rising prices of petroleum on the global market,” added Leppmets.
Finland was the top partner country in exports
The main commodities exported in August were electrical equipment (15% of Estonia’s total exports), agricultural products and food preparations (11%), transport equipment (10%) and wood and articles of wood (10%). Year on year, exports of base metals and articles of base metal, including metal waste, increased the most – by 20 million euros (18%). The biggest fall was recorded in the exports of mineral products (down by 8 million euros, or 6%) and agricultural products and food preparations (down by 8 million euros, or 5%).
Exports of goods of Estonian origin remained at the same level as in August last year and represented 62% of Estonia’s total exports in August this year. Wood and articles of wood and electrical equipment were the most exported commodities of Estonian origin.
Intra-EU exports were up by 7% in August year on year, while extra-EU exports declined by 8%. Estonia’s top export partner in August was Finland (17% of total exports), followed by Latvia (13%) and Lithuania (10%). The main commodities exported were electrical equipment to Finland, transport equipment and agricultural products and food preparations to Latvia, and transport equipment to Lithuania. Exports of goods to Latvia showed the biggest growth (up by 31 million euros, or 19%), with more dispatches of mineral products, including natural gas and electricity. The greatest decline was recorded in exports of goods to Singapore (down by 29 million euros, or 94%) and Norway (down by 16 million euros, or 29%), due to decreased exports of mineral products.
Imports from Lithuania increased the most year on year
The main commodities imported in August were electrical equipment (14% of Estonia’s total imports), mineral products (12%), agricultural products and food preparations (12%) and transport equipment (12%). Compared with August last year, imports of mineral products grew the most – by 52 million euros.
The top partner countries for Estonia’s imports of goods were Lithuania (12% of total imports), Finland (12%) and Latvia (11%). The main commodities imported were mineral products from Lithuania and Finland, and agricultural products and food preparations from Latvia. Imports of goods from Lithuania grew the most (by 50 million euros, or 28%), as there were more arrivals of mineral products, including automotive fuel. Year on year, there was a decrease in imports from the United States (down by 23 million euros, or 49%), mainly due to reduced imports of electrical equipment and parts thereof.
