The consumer price index down by 1.1% in September compared with August
According to Statistics Estonia, in September, the consumer price index decreased by 1.1% compared with August and increased by 5.2% compared with September 2024. Goods were 2.8% and services 8.9% more expensive than in September last year.
Lauri Veski, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that the last time the consumer price index fell compared with the previous month was in March this year, when it was down by 0.5%. However, the last time we saw such a big drop as we are seeing now was nearly three years ago, in October 2022.
“Compared with September last year, the rise in the consumer price index was primarily driven by food prices, which were up by 7.7%,” Veski noted, commenting on the year-on-year increase in the index. Among food products, the most significant year-on-year price increases were recorded for meat and meat products (up by 8.2%), as well as for milk, dairy products and eggs (up by 8.2%), fruits (up by 15%), and chocolate (up by 36.8%). A year-on-year fall was registered in the prices of vegetables (down by 2.6%) and sugar (down by 14.3%).
Compared with August this year, expenditure on housing fell by 0.6% in September, including a 4.8% drop in rent. Electricity was 1.6% more expensive than in August. Petrol in September was 11.7% and diesel fuel 11.5% cheaper. Clothing and footwear prices rose by 2.6% compared with August but fell by 4.5% year on year.
Food products were 1% cheaper in September than in August. Falling prices of vegetables (5.7%) and fruits (4.6%) contributed the most to the decrease in food prices. Increases in the prices of fish and fish preparations (3.1%) and bread and bakery products (3.7%) had the opposite effect on the index.
