In April, the rise in the consumer price index was the smallest of the last three years
According to Statistics Estonia, in April, the consumer price index increased by 0.9% compared with March and by 2.8% compared with April 2023. Goods were 2.4% and services 3.3% more expensive than in April last year.
The last time that the change of the consumer price index compared with the same month of the previous year was smaller than 2.8% was in April 2021, when it was 1.9%.
Viktoria Trasanov, team lead of consumer price statistics at Statistics Estonia, said that, compared with April 2023, the consumer price index was influenced the most by price changes related to housing (-5.3%). “The automatically applied compensation measures for electricity, gas, and district heating ended from April 2023 and therefore no longer influenced the index,” noted Trasanov. Other bigger contributors were transport-related price changes – passenger transport was 15.7% and the operation of personal transport equipment 4.6% more expensive, including 4.6% higher prices for petrol and 2.6% higher prices for diesel fuel. Among food products, the biggest decreases compared with April last year were registered in the prices of fresh vegetables (-18.3%) and sugar (-14.8%). On the other hand, olive oil was 39.1%, canned milk 21.2% and confectionery 19.8% more expensive.
Compared with March, the consumer price index was influenced the most by transport-related price changes, as petrol was 4.2% and plane tickets bought for April 31.4% more expensive. The index was also influenced by the end of discount prices for various food products and non-alcoholic beverages.
