There were more foreign tourists accommodated in August (corrected on 11.10.2024)

According to Statistics Estonia, accommodation establishments served 455,000 tourists in August 2024, which is 6% more than in August last year. The number of foreign tourists increased, whereas the number of domestic tourists decreased.

Helga Laurmaa, leading analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the number of accommodated tourists was still 7% lower than in August 2019. “In August this year, 232,000 foreign and 224,000 domestic tourists were accommodated in Estonia. There were 14% more foreign tourists and 1% fewer domestic tourists than in August last year,” added Laurmaa.

Nearly 69,000 tourists arrived from Finland, representing 30% of all accommodated foreign tourists. Accommodation establishments served 27,000 tourists from Latvia (12%), 22,000 tourists from Germany (8%), and 11,000 tourists from Lithuania (5%). Compared with August 2023, the biggest increase was registered in the number of accommodated tourists from Germany, which was up by 6,600 year on year. At the same time, the number of tourists from Lithuania was down by 3,000.

Typically for August, the majority (84%) of the accommodated foreign tourists were on holiday, and 11% were travelling on business. 69% of foreign tourists preferred to stay overnight in Harju county, followed by Pärnu (12%), Tartu (7%) and Saare (5%) counties.

In the case of accommodated domestic tourists, 75% were on holiday and 15% were on business trips. The biggest share of domestic tourists were accommodated in Harju county (22%), followed by Pärnu (17%), Ida-Viru (10%) and Saare (8%) counties.

Tourists spent a total of 821,000 nights in accommodation establishments: domestic tourists stayed for 372,000 nights and foreign tourists for 449,000 nights in total.

In August, 1,235 accommodation establishments served visitors in Estonia. There were 25,000 rooms and 60,000 bed places available for guests. The room occupancy rate was 57%. The average cost of a guest night was 48 euros per person, which is the same as in August 2023 but 23% more than in August 2019. The cost of an overnight stay per person was 52 euros in Harju county, 50 euros in Pärnu and Saare counties, 49 euros in Tartu and Lääne counties, 46 euros in Lääne-Viru county, and 41 euros in Ida-Viru county.
