GDP flash estimate: recession slowed down in Q2
According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the second quarter of 2024. GDP fell by approximately 1.7% compared with the second quarter of 2023.

Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector
Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before
According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

In the 2nd quarter the average monthly gross wages and salaries grew, but the real wages continued to fall
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2011, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 857 euros and they grew 4.2% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. But the real wages continued the falling trend, which had lasted for over two years and a half already.

In the 2nd quarter construction grew by a tenth during the year
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2011 compared to the same quarter of the previous year, the total production of Estonian construction enterprises in Estonia and foreign countries grew 11%, of which 10% on domestic market.

According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2011 the producer price index of industrial output changed by 0.2% compared to June and by 5.2% compared to July of the previous year.

Unemployment decreased in the 2nd quarter
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2011, the unemployed persons numbered 92,000 and the unemployment rate was 13.3%. Nearly a third of the unemployed have been without work for two years or more.

Lots of tourists stayed in accommodation establishments in the 1st half of the year
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 1st half of 2011, nearly 1.2 million foreign and domestic tourists stayed in accommodation establishments, which was 15% more than in the same period of the previous year. The number of tourists in accommodation establishments exceeded also the first half-year result of 2008, i.e. the best year of the past decade, by 10%.

In June the growth of exports and imports slowed down
According to Statistics Estonia, in June 2011, exports from Estonia amounted to 947 million euros and imports to Estonia to 1 billion euros at current prices. Exports increased by 43% and imports by 33% compared to June of the previous year.

In June the slowdown in the growth of industrial production continued
According to Statistics Estonia, in June 2011 the production of industrial enterprises grew 24% compared to June of the previous year. If at the beginning of the year the production grew around 30%, then in May and June the growth of industrial production slightly slowed down compared to the same month of the previous year.
