According to Statistics Estonia, more than 4,000 persons have already expressed their wish to work for the 2011 Population and Housing Census. Large-scale job competitions will be announced this autumn.

Starting from the end of May, persons interested in working as supervisor of enumerators, enumerator or data processing operator have had an opportunity to notify Statistics Estonia of their respective wish via the website of 2011 Population and Housing Census (PHC 2011) at  /uudised/population-census. In addition, one can also order a memo stating the start time of job competition to be sent to one’s e-mail address.

“As of the start of August, more than 4,000 persons have already notified us of their wish to work for us,” said Ms Palmi Lindjärv, Human Resources Manager of PHC 2011. The recruitment procedure attracts wide interest since Statistics Estonia has planned to recruit over 2,400 persons for the Census. A lot of people, who had worked for previous population censuses, have also contacted us.“

The largest number of persons has registered in Tallinn and in Harju county i.e. the regions for which also the largest number of census staff will be recruited. “At the same time, the interest in census-related jobs is rather even across the whole of Estonia,” she noted.

By now, competitions for the recruitement of 15 district heads and 25 personnel employees have ended successfully. “The interest in both competitions was unexpectedly wide for us – 397 persons all over Estonia took part in the competition for the 15 district head positions and 1,093 persons participated in the competition for the 25 personnel employee positions,” added Ms Lindjärv.

For conducting PHC 2011, Statistics Estonia has planned to recruit over 2,400 persons: 2,200 enumerators (incl. 200 enumerators on-call time), 132 supervisors of enumerators, 15 district heads, 25 personnel employees and 90 data processing operators. All job offers are published at /uudised/population-census where also short descriptions of jobs and requirements for them can be found.

Those interested in working as supervisor of enumerators, enumerator or data processing operator can register at /uudised/population-census under the heading “Job vacancies”. One can insert the desired job, job region and contact data on the web form. When the competition is announced, a memo will be sent by e-mail to those having registered.

In Estonia, the Population and Housing Census will be carried out from 31 December this year until 31 March next year. The electronic Population and Housing Census or e-census, where the permanent residents of Estonia can fill out questionnaires on the Internet, will take place during the first month (31.12.2011–31.01.2012). Those who do not participate in the e-census will be visited by enumerators in the period 16.02–31.03.2012.

In 2011 the Population Census will be conducted for the eleventh time in the territory of Estonia. Previous censuses were carried out in 1881, 1897, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1959, 1970, 1979, 1989 and 2000. In 2010 and 2011 Population and Housing Censuses will be held in the majority of countries all over the world.
