GDP flash estimate: recession slowed down in Q2
According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the second quarter of 2024. GDP fell by approximately 1.7% compared with the second quarter of 2023.

Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector
Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before
According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

Two thirds of households of Estonia have access to the Internet at home
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 1st quarter of 2009 63% of Estonian households had access to the Internet at home, compared to the same period of the previous year this indicator has increased five percentage points. Almost all enterprises with 10 and more persons employed had access to the Internet as in the previous three years.

Share of renewable energy in electricity production is increasing
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2008 Estonian enterprises produced 1.5 times more wind power and by a third more hydro power compared to 2007. Since 2005, electricity production from renewable sources has gradually increased.

In July less tourists in accommodation establishments than a year ago
According to Statistics Estonia, in July 317,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Estonia, which was 9% less than at the same time in the previous year.

In July exports and imports of goods decreased
According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in July 2009 exports of goods from Estonia amounted to 8.2 billion kroons at current prices and imports to Estonia 9.4 billion kroons. Exports and imports of goods decreased compared to June this year as well as to July of the previous year.

In the 2nd quarter the economy was continuously in decline
According to the first estimates of Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia decreased by 16.1% in the 2nd quarter of 2009 compared to the same quarter in the previous year. The GDP decreased successively for six quarters.

According to Statistics Estonia, the consumer price index decreased by 0.9% in August 2009 compared to August of the previous year and was 0.0% compared to July 2009.

Net sales of enterprises decreased by nearly a fourth
According to Statistics Estonia, the net sales of the business sector amounted to 130 billion kroons in the 2nd quarter of 2009 which at current prices was 23% less than in the 2nd quarter of the previous year.

In July the decrease in retail sales accelerated
According to Statistics Estonia, in July the retail sales of goods of retail trade enterprises were 4.9 billion kroons, which was 16% smaller at constant prices compared to July of the previous year. The decrease in the retail sales that had slowed down in the previous month accelerated again in July.

According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2009 compared to July of the previous year, the production of industrial enterprises decreased 28%. The decline in industrial production that had started at the end of the previous year continued in July.

The decline on the construction market has slowed down
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2009 compared to the same period of the previous year, the total production of Estonian construction enterprises decreased 28%. In the 1st quarter of the present year the production was 31% smaller than a year ago.

The decrease of the average monthly gross wages and salaries continued
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2009, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 12,716 kroons and the hourly gross wages and salaries were 77.16 kroons. Compared to the 2nd quarter of the previous year, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were by 4.4% lower and the average hourly gross wages and salaries were by 1.4% lower.

In June petroleum products contributed to foreign trade
According to Statistics Estonia, in June 2009 exports of goods at current prices totalled 9.4 billion kroons and imports 9.8 billion kroons. Petroleum products accounted for a quarter of the trade.
