Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before

According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

Working international students and graduates contributed over ten million euros in taxes

Statistics Estonia prepared an analysis for Archimedes Foundation on the participation of international students in the Estonian labour market and its impact on the economy. It appeared that in the previous academic year, foreign students paid eight million euros in income and social tax in Estonia. International students who graduated the year prior contributed additionally over two million euros. The share of international students who work besides studying has increased significantly in the last three years. A half of them continue working in Estonia even after receiving a diploma.

In October, trade continued to decline

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2019, compared to October 2018, the exports of goods decreased by 7% and imports by 6%. The biggest decline, by nearly a fifth, was recorded in trade with non-EU countries.

The number of job vacancies remains over 10,000

According to Statistics Estonia, in the 3rd quarter of 2019, there were 11,892 job vacancies in the enterprises, institutions and organisations of Estonia. The number of job vacancies has remained above 10,000 since the 1st quarter of 2017.

Statistics Estonia is studying time use of Estonian people

In the first week of December, Statistics Estonia launched the Time Use Survey. The survey takes place every ten years and will end in 2021. Information is collected about how and where people over the age of 10 spend their time and what modes of transport they use.

Industrial production decreased in October

According to Statistics Estonia, in October 2019, the production of industrial enterprises decreased by 4% compared to October 2018. Production remained at the same level in manufacturing but decreased in energy and mining.

Stable economic growth continued

According to Statistics Estonia, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Estonia grew 4.2% in the 3rd quarter of 2019 compared to the same period of the previous year. The Estonian GDP was 7 billion euros at current prices.
