GDP flash estimate: recession slowed down in Q2
According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the second quarter of 2024. GDP fell by approximately 1.7% compared with the second quarter of 2023.

Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector
Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before
According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

Construction price index is in a continuous fall
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2009 the percentage change of the construction price index was -8.8% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2008. The construction price index fell for the second quarter in succession compared to the same quarter of the previous year.

According to Statistics Estonia, in June 2009 the producer price index decreased 0.2% compared to May and 1.2% compared to June 2008.

In May fewer tourists stayed in accommodation establishments than in the same month of previous year
According to Statistics Estonia, in May 189,000 tourists stayed in accommodation establishments of Estonia, which was 16% less than in the same month of previous year. The average cost of a guest night has fallen down to the level of 2003.

In May foreign trade deficit was record-breakingly small
According to the preliminary data of Statistics Estonia, in May 2009 exports of goods from Estonia amounted to 8 billion kroons at current prices and imports to Estonia 8.6 billion kroons. Foreign trade deficit was five times less than in May of the previous year being smaller than that last in September 1995.

In May the retail sales were smaller than a year ago
According to Statistics Estonia, in May the retail sales of goods of retail trade enterprises were 4.8 billion kroons, which was by 16% smaller at constant prices compared to May of the previous year.

A fifth of the residents of Estonia live in relative poverty
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2007 19.5% of the Estonian population lived in relative poverty, a similar amount to the previous year. The difference in income between the poorest and richest fifth of the population was fivefold, leaving Estonia persistently in the top ten of the poorest countries in Europe.

Last year the average wages and salaries were below 13,000 kroons
According to Statistics Estonia, in 2008, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were 12,912 kroons and the hourly gross wages and salaries were 77.52 kroons. Compared to 2007, the average monthly gross wages and salaries increased by 13.9% and the average hourly gross wages and salaries by 15.3%.

Information and communications technologies sector gave 5% of the net sales of the business sector
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 1st quarter of 2009, 1,700 enterprises operated in the information and communications technologies (ICT) sector, which gave 5% of the net sales of the business sector.
