GDP flash estimate: recession slowed down in Q2
According to Statistics Estonia's preliminary estimate, the decline in the gross domestic product (GDP) slowed down in the second quarter of 2024. GDP fell by approximately 1.7% compared with the second quarter of 2023.

Young workers are turning away from the information and communication sector
Statistics Estonia's short-term labour market statistics show that over the past year and a half, there have been fewer young people aged 20–29 working in both the broader information and communication sector and the more specific field of computer programming. While in previous years the field of computer programming was growing mainly because of young people, in the past year their numbers have fallen.

Sown area of potatoes smaller than ever before
According to preliminary data of Statistics Estonia and the Agricultural Registers and Information Board (ARIB), the utilised agricultural area this year is 983,400 hectares, which is 4,400 hectares less than in 2023. There has been a slight decrease in arable land, as well as in the area of fruit and berry plantations. The sown area of potatoes, which has been in decline for a long time, continues the trend and is 8% smaller in 2024 than the year before.

Producer price indices in July
According to Statistics Estonia, in July 2009 the producer price index increased 0.5% compared to June and decreased 1.6% compared to July 2008.

Unemployment record high among men
According to Statistics Estonia, the unemployment rate rose to 13.5% in the 2nd quarter of the current year. A year ago the unemployment rate was 4%. The number of employed persons decreased by 64,000 during the year.

The real estate market continuously in decline
According to Statistics Estonia, in the 2nd quarter of 2009, 6,500 purchase-sale transactions of real estate were carried out. Compared to the 2nd quarter 2008 the number of purchase-sale transactions decreased by one third, and compared to the previous quarter increased by one fifth.

According to Statistics Estonia, the consumer price index decreased 0.7% in July 2009 compared to July 2008 and increased 0.9% compared to June 2009.

In June the decrease in retail sales slowed down
According to Statistics Estonia, in June the retail sales of goods of retail trade enterprises were 5 billion kroons, which was 11% smaller at constant prices compared to June of the previous year. The decline in retail sales which had stood within the limits of 14–16% during the recent months slowed down to some extent in June.

In May the trade in machinery and equipment declined the most
According to Statistics Estonia, in May 2009 exports of goods at current prices were 31% less and imports 41% less than in the same month of the previous year. The decrease in trade was primarily caused by the steep decline in the exports and imports of machinery and equipment.
