People go to the cinema more and more in Estonia. A proof of that is ever larger admittance numbers as well as a wide selection of films at the cinema. There are around 50 cinemas in Estonia with over 80 screens. There are numerous film and video production enterprises in Estonia, producing full-length films and short films, documentaries, advertising films and animations. More and more full-length films are being produced in Estonia

According to Statistics Estonia, 29 full-length films were produced in Estonia in 2022. This is four more than in 2021. The number of corporate films has also increased, with a total of 1,773 made last year.

The number of cinema visits in 2021 was the lowest in 16 years (corrected on 25.10.2022)

In 2021, there were 25 full-length films produced in Estonia, including 14 feature films and 11 documentaries. 103 short films were produced: 46 documentaries, 45 feature films, and 12 animations. 299 films were shown on cinema screens, which is 69 fewer than in 2020. The number of cinema visits fell to 1.39 million.

According to Statistics Estonia, 30 full-length films were produced in Estonia last year, including 15 documentaries, 13 feature films and two animations. The number of short films (less than 60 minutes in length) produced last year was 132, including 62 documentaries, 44 feature films and 26 animations. Cinema attendance totalled nearly 3.7 million.

2018 was a good year in terms of film production as well as cinema attendance

According to Statistics Estonia, 34 full-length films were produced in Estonia in 2018, of which 22 were distributed in cinemas in the same year. Cinema attendance set a new record – 3.6 million visits, i.e. 275 visits per 100 inhabitants.

2013 was a fruitful year for Estonian film

According to Statistics Estonia, 40 full-length films were released in 2013. They included 10 of full-length feature films, 27 full-length documentaries, two full length animations and one other film.

Production of full-length films hit record in Estonia last year

According to Statistics Estonia, 46 full-length films were released in 2012 when Estonian film celebrated its 100th birthday. 13 of these were full-length feature films and 33 were full-length documentaries.
