Retail trade turnover was higher than last year, but the growth rate slowed down
According to Statistics Estonia, in February, the turnover of retail trade enterprises was 683 million euros. Compared to February 2021, turnover increased by 4% at constant prices.
Johanna Linda Pihlak, analyst at Statistics Estonia, said that the year-on-year growth in turnover was 8% in January but slowed down in February. Turnover increased in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel as well as in grocery stores and stores selling manufactured goods. “The biggest growth was recorded in enterprises engaged in the retail sale of automotive fuel, where turnover increased by 10% compared to February 2021. The increase in turnover was 4% in stores selling manufactured goods and 2% in grocery stores,” added Pihlak.
Among stores selling manufactured goods, the highest growth (15%) was recorded in the turnover of stores selling second-hand goods and in non-store retail sale (stalls, markets, direct sale). Turnover increased by 13% in pharmacies and stores selling cosmetics, by 5% in stores selling household goods and appliances, hardware and building materials, and by 5% in other non-specialised stores selling predominantly manufactured goods (department stores). The turnover of stores selling via mail order or the internet decreased by 5%, and the turnover of stores selling textiles, clothing and footwear decreased by 1%. Compared to February last year, turnover remained on the same level in other specialised stores selling predominantly computers and their accessories, books, sports equipment, games, toys, etc.
In February, compared to January, the turnover of retail trade enterprises decreased by 9%. According to the seasonally and working-day adjusted data, turnover fell by 2% compared to January.
The statistics are based on the VAT declaration data of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board. Statistics Estonia performs the statistical activity “Financial statistics of trade enterprises (monthly)” for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications in order to determine how the Estonian economy is doing.
